FAQs
What is DSF?
DSF wraps DSD (Direct Stream Digital) audio — the native format of SACDs and some hi-res downloads, playable only on dedicated DSD gear.
Does DSD-to-PCM lose quality?
DSD to 176.4kHz/24bit PCM is the industry-standard conversion (DSD64 maps to 176.4k); dynamics and frequency response are preserved — and you gain universal playback.
Are DFF files supported too?
Yes. DFF and DSF are two containers for the same DSD audio; both convert.
What DSD Is: A Fundamentally Different Recording Approach
Conventional digital audio (CD, FLAC, WAV) uses PCM: tens of thousands of samples per second, each a multi-bit value. DSD takes another road: 1 bit at extreme speed (DSD64 = 2.8224MHz, 64× the CD rate), encoding the waveform in bit density. It's the native format of SACD (Super Audio CD) and the selling point of some hi-res downloads.
The cost is a closed ecosystem: only dedicated DSD gear plays it — phones, computers, and ordinary amps don't. Converting to high-resolution FLAC (PCM) is the standard way to bring DSD content into everyday playback.
DSD Tiers and the FLAC Specs They Map To
DSD64→176.4kHz/24bit is the industry-standard mapping (DSD128/256 scale accordingly), and conversion preserves full quality. Long whole-SACD rips may exceed the single-file size limit — cut them by track with the trim tool and convert per segment.
| DSD Tier | Sample Rate | PCM Output | Size per Minute (stereo) |
|---|---|---|---|
| DSD64 (SACD standard) | 2.8224 MHz | 176.4kHz / 24bit | ~42 MB |
| DSD128 | 5.6448 MHz | 352.8kHz / 24bit | ~85 MB |
| DSD256 | 11.2896 MHz | 705.6kHz / 24bit | ~169 MB |
DSF vs DFF: Two Boxes for the Same Music
- DSF: the Sony spec, supports ID3 tags (title/cover art) — the default output of SACD rip tools and the most common.
- DFF: the Philips spec, no tags; common in early SACD rips and some hi-res download stores.
- Both convert identically; for collections, prefer DSF (tags make life easier).
