FAQs

Why is MP4 so much smaller than GIF?

GIF stores every frame in full and is limited to 256 colors; H.264 uses inter-frame compression with full color — typically 5–10x smaller for the same animation.

Will the MP4 still loop automatically?

Yes — in WhatsApp, Telegram, and most social clients, short MP4s autoplay and loop just like GIFs.

Is transparency preserved?

No. MP4 doesn't support alpha transparency; transparent areas are filled white. Keep GIF if you need transparency.

Why Are GIFs So Huge? 1987 Design Meets Modern Content

GIF was born in 1987 (CompuServe forums), older than the web itself. Three built-in limits are all painful today: 256 colors per frame (true gradients band instantly), near-zero inter-frame compression (most frames stored in full), and LZW compression that does almost nothing for motion.

MP4/H.264 is built for motion: inter-frame deltas, true color, motion compensation. The same animation as MP4 typically lands at 1/10 to 1/5 of the GIF size — with better quality, since the 256-color ceiling is gone.

When Not to Convert — and When to Convert Right Now

  • Keep GIF: transparent-background stickers and brand animations; tiny decorative icons; forms that only accept GIF uploads.
  • Convert now: animations for WhatsApp/Telegram/Discord; demos embedded in web pages; any GIF over 2MB — converted, it shrinks an order of magnitude and sends in any chat.
  • Platform trick: mainstream chat apps auto-loop short MP4 videos — visually identical to a GIF, but sharper and faster to load.
